Leavenworth, Plain, Lake Wenatchee, Cashmere

The Tumwater Canyon is the spectacular gateway to the renowned Bavarian Village of Leavenworth. The Wenatchee River hugs sheer canyon walls on one side, twisting through the rocky gorge. Suddenly, round a corner and there is Leavenworth, nestled against towering, jagged mountains.

Beforehand though, consider a detour through quaint Plain, a small community offering  abundant activities in winter: snowmobile tours, sleigh rides and cross-country skiing, and hiking, horseback riding and zip-lining in summer. Pristine Lake Wenatchee, just 3 miles from Plain, delivers breathtaking views, fishing and a swimming area for the kids.

Leavenworth, Washington’s Bavarian Village, is wildly popular. From spring through fall, planter boxes and the natural landscape turn into a riot of color, while winter ushers in snow and holiday cheer. Leavenworth features restaurants from around the world, as well as amazing selection of culinary boutiques offering everything from handmade chocolates, wines, imported and local cheeses, and salumi made in-house following traditional , time-honored techniques. Are you more of a nature seeker? Don’t give it a second though t! Leavenworth is an ideal jumping off point for nature walks and back country exploration. TONS of day hikes are accessible via the Icicle River Valley (think Eight-Mile Lake, Icicle Gorge Trail or Colchuck Lake) or simply stretch your legs at Leavenworth’s Riverfront Park, easily accessiblefrom downtown.

The Wenatchee River, flowing from Lake Wenatchee through Leavenworth and on to Cashmere, offers world-class rafting. Cashmere sits right beside the river and is a seriously popular destination for folks wrapping up their day on the water. Cashmere is also a perfect place to hop out of your car and stretch your legs. This modern-day Mayberry offers a free tour of its historic (and nationally-acclaimed) Aplets & Cotlet s candy factory. Travelers also love exploring the Chelan County Museum & Pioneer Village.

Apple Annie’s Antique Mall is just across the highway, and is the largest antique shop in the Pacific Northwest.
